In the past 13 years Beijing city and the society went through rapid changes. The bicycle initiated some of these transformations as it went from an unwanted, discarded object reminding of the past to a fashion piece, recently transforming further into a device to represent healthy lifestyle.

Ines Brunn first came to Beijing in 2001 on a business trip and discovered less people cycling than she had expected. From year to year the number of people using the bicycle in the urban life kept drastically reducing as Beijing went through its fast modernization. Bicycle lanes were turned into car lanes or car parking places and some of the remaining separations between the bicycle and the car lanes were removed to make more space for the cars.

Ines Brunn knew that once the infrastructure for the bicycle was removed it would never return even if the bicycle would see a revival in future years. So in 2006 she started working with non-profit organizations to promote the use of bicycles, in the beginning unfortunately with little impact. In 2007 Ines started a “cool” bicycle group riding colorful light weight and simplistic bicycles and saw that hipsters were interested, despite those kind of bicycles not being available in China. So Ines made a quick decision to quit her well-paid job and open a bicycle shop to enable the Chinese to get such cool bikes and through to this get more people cycling in the city.

Much faster than expected with the help of media these bicycles soon became a fashion accessory and it was suddenly socially acceptable again to ride a bicycle – or even more, it became a new trend!

Ines Brunn has been working with organizations like the World Health Organization and the Royal Danish Embassy on promoting cycling for a healthier lifestyle. In 2015 the main focus is road safety, e.g. through putting up fences to separate the bicycle from the car lanes and in big intersections is using red paint to let the car traffic know how much space should be given to the cyclists.
